Disturbance as an ecological factor

Adaptations of plants and animals to disturbances

To survive and reproduce, alpine organisms have to be adapted to the whole set of often harsh environmental conditions which they experience in their habitat. Disturbances are just one aspect. The growth form and life cycle of an organism reflect adaptations to its whole environment.

Climatic stress

Besides adaptations to the often extreme climatic conditions of the alpine environment, organisms may be adapted to special types of disturbance, if these are sufficiently widespread and predictable to allow adaptive evolution.

It is hard to say what is or is not an evolved adaptation to a special environmental condition. Yet, some (morphological) traits of organisms seem to be associated with particular types of disturbance and the advantage is sometimes obvious.

Act Click on the various organisms below and try to find out under which environmental condition the special charcteristics of the species will be of advantage.
