The present alpine landscape and relief are the consequence
of various exogenic (e.g. tectonics) and endogenic (e.g. weathering, erosion)
factors. With regard to the endogenic factors, rock type, and therefore
the morphological resistance of the different rocks to weathering and
erosion, plays a major role. Additionally, structural characteristics
like bedding form (horizontal, dipping, folded etc.) are important. In
this lesson some examples will be given with respect to these endogenic
factors. Of course, in nature things are much more complex, due to fast-changing
climatic conditions in mountainous
areas and to different rock age. But a good observer may well be able
to identify main geological units anywhere by carefully studying the relief
of a landscape.
