Selfing

Selfing in an annual Euphrasia

The tiny alpine annual Euphrasia minima has a breeding system promoting self-fertilization. The stigma and anthers are ripe at the same time. The style is bent back and the receptive stigma is positioned below the anthers. Pollen falling down causes selfing.

Euphrasia

1 - Euphrasia minima (Scrophulariaceae) (after Hess 2001)
