Four of the six species showed
here are endemics in two ways: First, they are endemic species of the
island of Corsica. Second, within the island of Corsica, they only occur
in mountainous areas above 1000 m a.s.l. Moreover Acinos corsicus
and Leucanthemopsis alpina subsp. tomentosa are confined
to the uppermost areas of the island of Corsica. The latter species is
a patroendemic (diploid), its related subsp. alpina is polyploid
and occurs in the Alps and the Pyrenees.
The two other species, Viola argenteria and Helichrysum
frigidum, do also occur outside of the island of Corsica, but nevertheless
they are endemics. Viola argenteria is restricted to the highest
peaks of Corsica, but also occurs in the Maritime Alps (Mercantour), while
Helichrysum frigidum is a paleoendemic species of the mountainous
areas of Corsica and Sardinia. Further information is given by Gamisans
and Marzocchi (1996).
