Calcic Solonetz

Location: Andes, Chile, 3000 m asl

C: Sandy, unweathered, eolic sediment

II Btn: Prismatic horizon with clay illuviation, high Na-content, relict of a more humid past period.

II Cck: Accumulation of carbonates, which have been washed out of the Btn-horizon.

II C: Sand

Solonetz is a soil type with a high Na-saturation (> 15%), leading to vertical structures, with a high clay content and high alcalinity (pH 8-11). Solonetz may develop from Solonchaks, if climate conditions change, e.g. if precipitation is increasing or the groundwater table is lowering. If conditions are dry, the Btn-horizon of a Solonetz is very hard, if wet, then the aggregates of the Btn are loosing their cohesion, resulting in a muddy consistence.
