Soil-moraine sequence |
||
A fossil black soil (peat) beneath a moraine of the Holocene in Chile (30°S, 3600 m). The peat has a 14C-age of about 3000 yr BP, indicating the advancing glaciers at that time, because the peat is overlain by the moraine. Today, this region is a desert and glaciers are generally lacking even on mountain peaks above 6000 m. |
