RAGMAC Glacier Volume Change Intercomparison Experiment

The present website provides you with the basic information and data required for the intercomparison experiments.

More information about the experiments is given in a GoogleDoc.

You may download the zipped data packages using the links given below or through the directory index.

Note on COPY RIGHTS: all provided DEMs are only to be used for research related to RAGMAC. For any other purposes, the terms of use must be clarified with the original data provider.

Deadlines - pease submit your results until the following dates:

+ Mandatory glacier regions for experiment 1 (Aletsch, Hintereis) and 2 (Baltoro): 30 January 2022

+ Optional glacier regions for experiment 1 (Vestisen) and 2 (FJL, NPI): 27 February 2022

+ Final submission of results and corrections: 31 March 2022

Data submission:
Please submit your results in one zip-file (max 100 GB) using the following Switch Drive.

EXPERIMENT 1

Tasks: Use all or a selection of the provided DEMs – either ASTER or TDX – to estimate mean thickness (m) and volume (km3) changes for the provided glaciers outlines for the indicated validation period. Please apply all corrections (e.g., co-registration to reference DEM, mosaicking, void filling, correction to validation period) needed for assessing the glacier elevation and volume changes and related systematic and random uncertainties. Note that there is no conversion to mass changes needed. The focus of this experiment is on the time problem – try to match the validation period as best as possible, including seasonal corrections if need. More information is given in the GoogleDoc.

Deliverables:
+ For each glacier in the '*_selection.shp' file, provide glacier-wide results and related uncertainties (95% conf. interval) in corresponding CSV-files: results-template.csv, error-template.csv
+ Elevation change fields as GEOTIFF in WGS84 and in the UTM projection of the input data.
+ Extended abstract as PDF including authors, affiliations, author contributions, description of processing steps, applied corrections and uncertainty assessment.

Please name your deliverables accoring to the following naming convention:
Author_PU_GLACIER_END-DATE_START-DATE_RUN_results/errors/abstract.csv/tiff/pdf

While:
+ AUTHOR: your choice, but short! (Note that full author lists can be given in the abstract.)
+ PU: political unit (e.g., AT, CH, CL, NO, PK, RU)
+ END-/START-DATE: YYYY-MM-DD
+ RUN: CTL: control (without seasonal correction); SEAS: seasonal correction applied.
For more details on these runs, please check the GoogleDoc.

EXPERIMENT 2

Tasks: Use all or a selection of the provided DEMs – ASTER, TDX, or both – to estimate mean thickness (m) and volume (km3) changes for the provided glacier outlines for the survey periods as indicated below. Participants are encouraged to provide different results from different configurations of their processing workflow by switching off some processing steps (i.e., co-registration, penetration correction, ...). The focus of this experiment is on the processing problem, which means to evaluate how the different processing steps/corrections impact the overall volume change estimates. More details are provided in the GoogleDoc.

+ PU: political unit (e.g., AT, CH, CL, NO, PK, RU)
