In the mountains of southern Norway the treeline has recently reached considerably higher elevations than during the past century, mainly due to the abandonment of summer farming and a decrease in grazing pressure. 100 years ago, these slopes near Kongsvoll were not covered by trees, but by subalpine meadows.
