Altitude-latitude relationship for needle-ice observations (after Lawler, 1988)

The lower limit of needle-ice occurrence reflects areas, where no (or almost no) ground freezing occurs.
The upper limit may be formed by permafrost, permanent snow cover or by insufficient soil moisture.
