The presence of Andosols is related to the modern volcanic activity in a large part of the tropical Andes. Besides, Histosols with their high humus content are the precondition for old Indian agricultural activities (e.g. potatoes). Soil frost occurs above 3000 m during a great part of the year and is mainly diurnal, in contrast to conditions in extratropical mountains.
